Fleas are very important pests, especially during the summer months, but sometimes persist all year when indoors. It is estimated pet owners alone spend over $1 billion each year controlling fleas. There are five common kinds of fleas, Cat Flea, Dog Flea, Northern Rat Flea, Oriental Rat Flea, Rabbit Flea, the Cat Flea being the most common species.
Adult fleas are not only a nuisance, but can cause medical problems including flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, secondary skin irritations and, in extreme cases, anemia. A typical flea population consists of 50% eggs, 35% larvae, 10% pupae and only 5% adults.
Feeding pets garlic, brewer's yeast or B vitamins has not been shown to be
effective against fleas. Also, pennyroyal, eucalyptus, rosemary, tea leaves
and citronella have not provided effective control. In fact, overdosing of
garlic or onion can be irritating or toxic to pets. So please, contact you
veterinarian before you start any flea control program for you pet.
