Fruit flies are small pests that are commonly found in homes, restaurants and other facilities where food is processed. They are also known as "pomace flies" or "vinegar flies". Fruit flies are found on moist, decaying matter that has been stationary for several days. The larvae feed on yeasts that develop within ripening and decaying fruits or other decaying organic matter.

Because Fruit flies are found in unsanitary conditions, they are a potential heath concern, especially when present in health facilities.
